Venus In Fur: An Ode To Mosadi is a multi-disciplinary Pop art project, by Studio Taki. The oeuvre is an adulation, commemoration and education about the Iconic African Women who have shaped our world, from Science, Education Technology, Culture, Art, Literature, Theatre, Politics, Economics, and Engineering to Activism, Humanitarian and Social uplifting. The project is an appreciation of the pillar of life: a futuristic look back on where we come from.
African women are reimagined through Western and Eastern popular culture comic book superheroes, cartoon, and anime characters to more easily convey the values that these women represent. The project ‘Venus in Fur: An Ode to Mosadi’ has brought twenty-seven works by the artist from South Africa to Rome, who has mixed styles, colors, and mediums. Among the graphic and pictorial works, we also find the ‘Mphatlalatsana‘ toy series: an army of women holding shields and guns to fight, with a white veil on their heads that helps them defeat the darkness.
In the paintings showing the women personalities who changed Africa, we find Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female president in Africa, who is transformed into Wonder Woman in the works of Studio Taki. Graca Machel, a Mozambican politician and advocate who is renowned for producing the UNICEF report on the impact of armed conflict on children, is known as the “Machel Report”, published in 1996. Brenda Fassie, South Africa’s “Queen of African Pop,” becomes Snow White in Studio Taki’s portrayal. All these women stand as towering figures, having built institutions that lead the world and show compassion that has healed many, emerging victorious in overwhelming battles, gracing global stages with their talents, and enriching our lives with their wisdom and prayers. Their hearts educate, and their presence has been blessed.
