The 13th edition of ROME INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR represented a forum for the direct exchange of ideas and contacts between collectors, artists, photographers, designers and art professionals, and provided a unique opportunity for artists and exhibitors to present their works to an international audience of art professionals seeking to acquire, publish and encourage the best talents in contemporary art. The exhibition analysed the body-space relationship and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban contexts in contemporary times, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.
MIXING IDENTITIES analyzed the hidden parts of our identities and their infinite modes of expression, through an immersive experience in the fascinating universe of the labyrinths of our consciousness. While FUTURE LANDSCAPES focused primarily on the concept of boundaries and structures between body, mind and soul, human identity and the city, space and ground, transforming surfaces into an open flow of pure ideas.

The exhibition began with standout performances that invited viewers to immerse themselves in each artist’s unique narrative: Edith Von Hammer‘s “Angizia, the Ancient Goddess,” delved into the intersection of feminine power and historical erasure. Through her piece, Von Hammer resurrected the story of Angizia, a goddess symbolizing control over life and death, whose story was obscured by patriarchal forces, a powerful commentary on the ongoing silencing of women’s voices throughout history. Nathan French’s work further explored themes of transformation and identity through material experimentation: drawing from his background in fashion, he works with unconventional textures to create sculptures that evolve over time. By allowing natural processes to shape his pieces, French blurs the line between the organic and the artificial, embracing imperfection and change resulting in sculptures that are “in flux”, neither fixed nor static, embodying the unpredictable nature of human existence.
This theme of powerful female figures continued with Luis Fernando Ramirez Mata‘s Divas series, where he pays tribute to influential women throughout history, from Isabel the Catholic to modern icons like Anne Hathaway. Ramirez Mata celebrates the importance of women’s voices, drawing attention to their contributions and the marks they’ve left on society and culture. Ramirez Mata’s fusion of baroque techniques with modern styles, such as pouring, complements the idea of reviving and reinterpreting history, offering a fresh perspective on the timeless influence of women.
The contrast between the light of the conscious mind and the darkness of the subconscious creates a compelling visual dialogue in Phyllis Plumley‘s “Diva and Her Shadows.” This striking work delves into human psychology, using the archetype of the diva or goddess to embody the persona, highlighting the rational and logical facets of identity. In stark contrast, the shadows represent the subconscious, unveiling the irrational and often hidden aspects of the psyche. Plumley’s exploration offers a profound reflection on the complexities of human nature, revealing the delicate interplay between our conscious self and the mysteries that lie beneath. In a similar vein, Faceless, a New York-based artist, engages with the complexities of identity through a distinct fusion of street art and fine art, using oil painting and aerosol spray as his mediums. His work explores the concept of identity – or the absence of it – by embracing anonymity, encouraging observers to focus on the emotions and ideas his art evokes rather than the artist behind it. Through provocative, boundary-pushing creations, Faceless challenges societal norms, transforming his pieces into mirrors that reflect the audience’s life journey.
Rome, a city imbued with its classical heritage, embraces once again a rich tapestry of cultures and art forms. One such example was Kaveri Sageder‘s “Expressions in Time”, an immersive exploration of Kathak, one of India’s classical dance forms. Through this performance, Sageder invited the audience to delve into the heart of Kathak’s intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures, and rhythmic recitations, blending music, rhythm, and storytelling, that highlighted the profound connection between movement and emotion. Where Sageder’s performance explored the connection between movement and emotion, Natalia Ariss’s use of vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes delves into the emotional landscapes of grief, loss, and healing. The vibrant use of color and varied brushstrokes serves as a tool for transmuting pain into calm, inviting viewers into a space of introspection and emotional connection. Drawing inspiration from nature and her travels, Ariss seeks to engage the observer in a personal interpretation of her pieces, offering a visual representation of healing, and empowering others to find their paths of transformation and self-acceptance.
The exhibition provided a powerful exploration of how artists, through diverse media, challenge the boundaries of identity, encouraging viewers to transcend conventional definitions and immerse themselves in thought-provoking experiences. Juan Ortiz Portas‘ video artwork stood out as a striking example, guiding the audience on a dreamlike journey where reality and perception dissolve. Through dynamic visuals, he creates an ethereal landscape filled with shifting fractals, flowing geometric patterns, and surreal abstractions. The fluid nature of the video medium allows for an evolving environment, where vibrant colors and pulsating forms lead the viewer through a deep introspective journey of consciousness. Ortiz Portas invites the spectator to become the protagonist, navigating this surreal world, encountering sentient forms, and uncovering hidden facets of the mind in an evocative process of perception and self-discovery. Herma de Wit’s artworks similarly invite introspection, delving into the delicate balance between fragility and strength in the natural world. Her recent paintings and works on paper, often featuring isolated flora, take on an abstract form, with rhythm playing a key role in their transformation. Through subtle depictions of flowers and branches, de Wit explores the spiritual significance of nature, uncovering the soul of the earth and creating a timeless dialogue between the natural world and the human spirit.
