Interview: Kevin Fernandez
Luca Curci
talks with Kevin Fernandez during FUTURE LANDSCAPES, the third appointment of BORDERS ART FAIR 2021, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

Kevin’s body of work explores the relationship between three-dimensional sacred geometry and two-dimensional string art as rendered through a minimalist aesthetic. Polyhedra is the playground in which he explores a novel approach to boundary dissolution, visualizing additional dimensions through a delicate arrangement of complementary or contrasting linear patterns. Kevin studies Polyhedra through mathematical analysis, reproducing their forms through skillful and precise machining of various wood species. All components are entirely handcrafted with special attention to detail. The strings are individually threaded with a needle and secured, one by one. Dedication to this process assures all joinery and knots are concealed in the final assembly. Ultraviolet reactive strings which glow in the presence of a black light can be utilized, providing for a special atmosphere.

LUCA CURCI – What is art for you?
KEVIN FERNANDEZ
– Art is for me a way to explore and meditate, being focused on each process, I can call art a ” therapy”.

LC – Which subject are you working on?
KF
– I am working with Polyhedrons mixed with string art techniques.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
KF
– I find inspiration in the 5 Platonic shapes and archimedean shapes too. For the string part, the artist David Press from New York, USA taught me his technique for the thread and the hidden knots. He is a great inspiration to me.

    INTERVIEW: LAVINIA DE ROTHSCHILD

    Interviews | March 29, 2025

I am a painter working with photography as a primary medium. My images are constructed entirely in front of the lens - no Photoshop, no AI, no digital manipulation. Each work is staged with physical elements and captured as it exists. This deliberate absence of editing reflects a deeper intention: to preserve the truth of the moment, not perfect it. Painting taught me how to work with time, stillness, and emotional layering. Photography allows me to move differently - to hold a fleeting feeling before it disappears. I approach each image as I would a canvas, composing it with precision while allowing space for accident, tension, and breath. Read more
