Interview: Lulu Alghofaili
Luca Curci talks with Lulu Alghofaili, one of the winners of ARTIST OF THE MONTH – NOVEMBER 2020.

Lulu Alghofaili is a Saudi artist, designer, and storyteller. She is currently based in Los Angeles, CA, where she pursued her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Graphic design with a double minor in Book Arts and Sustainability at Otis college of art and design. Lulu specializes in print and screen-based formats and works in digital and analog processes. Her practice is inspired by nature and focused on integrating Sustainability after it significantly influenced her life. She uses recycled materials and eco-friendly mediums throughout her process and practice. Lulu’s creative thinking is based on research for problem-solving, where she finds new solutions to educate, inspire, and protect.

Luca Curci – What is art for you? 
Lulu Alghofaili – Art is where I can express, explore, reflect, and take on new challenges.

LC – What are you currently working on?
LA – Currently, I am working on a project about water scarcity and how to find new solutions to conserve water.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
LA – I have a bachelor’s degree in communication arts with an emphasis in graphic design. I also obtained double minors in Sustainability and Book Arts. I would say that my Sustainability minor has influenced my life and my practice.

LC – What is your creative process like?
LA – My work is layer-based, where each layer explain a subject, a thought, and a story. My practice is inspired by translating nature into layers and combining both Analog and digital processes. My creative thinking is based on research for problem-solving, where I find new solutions to educate, inspire, and spread awareness.

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
LA – Yes, I am focusing on integrating Sustainability by using eco-friendly and recycled materials throughout my process. I am also utilizing my skills as an artist to promote the message of Sustainability within my art.

    I am a painter working with photography as a primary medium. My images are constructed entirely in front of the lens - no Photoshop, no AI, no digital manipulation.
